The good thing about Thailand is that no matter what your travel style is, (whether you are happy with a 5 $ dorm a night or 100 $ in a 3 starts hotel), it is absolutely possible to experience this awesome country on a budget.

Our general rule of thumb is that the more local you go( whether is food, guesthouses and so on) the better authentic experience you will have and cheaper it is going to be. If the restaurant is advertising lots of Western dishes options, we say no!

Choosing budget accommodations but still nice and comfortable is so easy in Thailand

The influx of backpackers and travelers in Thailand has reshaped the perception of the country as an extremely budget-friendly destination. While there are still affordable options available, it's important to note that Thailand now offers a wide range of entertainment and enticing activities that can quickly deplete your bank account. From comfortable air-conditioned accommodations to international restaurants serving comforting dishes, there are plenty of inviting options that may tempt even the most budget-conscious travelers.

While Thailand's bustling tourism scene may give the impression that it dominates the entire country, the reality is quite different. In fact, the popular tourist spots represent only a fraction of the countless places to explore in Thailand. With a little pre-planning, flexibility, and a willingness to venture off the beaten path, you'll discover boundless opportunities to experience Thailand on a budget. Embrace a different perspective from the majority of tourists, and you'll unlock the true essence of affordable travel in Thailand.

Tips to stay cheaply in Thailand:

Eat cheap

While food in Thailand is generally affordable, be cautious of dining at international restaurants or tourist hotspots, as prices can soar. To eat cheap in Thailand, embrace local street food and avoid hefty portions of meat.

Street food is the way to go in Thailand! tasty and cheap!

Seek out neighborhood street food away from main roads for the best prices. A plate of stir-fried vegetables over rice can cost as little as 25 - 30 THB ($0.83 - $1), while adding chicken or pork may raise it to 35 - 40 THB ($1.16 - $1.32). Enjoy bowls of Thai noodles for the same affordable price range. For those with a hearty appetite, opt for multiple plates of rice with a single dish to save money.

Fruit lovers can snag a bargain by avoiding pre-cut fruit carts and instead purchasing a kilogram of mangoes for around 15 THB ($0.50) at local markets.

Don't overlook local cafeterias frequented by locals, such as the ONCB cafeteria in Bangkok, where a generous plate of rice with two side dishes costs a mere 25 THB ($0.83). Keep an eye out for these hidden gems to dine affordably while savoring authentic Thai cuisine.

Stay at the cheapest accommodations

Affordable accommodations such as guesthouses, hostels, or budget hotels that offer competitive rates. Look for options with shared facilities or dormitory rooms to maximize savings, this sounds easy but we totally understand that it comes with some drawbacks! but hey! budget is budget. Consider recommended accommodations like "The North Hotel" in Chiang Rai or "Phangan Arena Hostel" in Koh Phangan, which provide budget-friendly stays without compromising comfort.

While finding free accommodation may not always be easy, there are opportunities in Thailand if you plan ahead. Join Couchsurfing, a community of travelers seeking free accommodation and local interactions. Connect with hosts in your desired area, send a couchsurfing request, and wait for a response. If everything aligns and a host agrees to accommodate you, you've secured a cost-free place to stay, yay!. Keep in mind that not all hosts are online all the time, so responses may not be immediate.

This was shocking to us, we only just figured this one out in our recent Thailand trip, but did you know that due to Thailand's strong Buddhist influence, Thai Wats offer accommodation and food to visitors who respect their rules, regardless of religious affiliation? Staying at a Thai monastery provides the ultimate and a unique budget-friendly experience.

If you prefer the convenience of hostels and guesthouses, you may find that double or triple rooms are sometimes cheaper than communal dorms. Sharing a room with friends or family can be more cost-effective. Solo travelers can expect dorm beds to range from 100 - 200 THB ($3.30 - $6.60) per night, while double and triple rooms typically cost 200 - 300 THB ($6.60 - $9.91) per night on the more affordable end. Opt for open-air fan rooms rather than air-conditioned ones for the best prices. Consider booking through Agoda.com to find the cheapest accommodations, including dorms, and take advantage of the 7% reward points to save on future bookings.

For budget-conscious travelers in Bangkok, The Overstay is a popular choice, with dorm beds priced at just 50 THB ($1.65) per night. Many travelers opt to stay for an extended period, as the name implies. Located outside the city center, it offers not only affordable accommodation but also cheaper food and other expenses.

Take the cheap Thai transportation

If you are looking to travel very cheaply in Thailand, you will need to avoid booking transportation at any tourist oriented travel agency. Go directly to the transportation central office and buy your tickets form the source where no one will be making a commission from you.

Trains and buses are probably the cheapest way to travel long distances in Thailand if you are flexible, patient, and have time to spare. We have taken endless trains and overnight buses to even cross to Laos and Cambodia. Prices can be as low as 271 THB ($8.94) traveling from Bangkok to Chiang Mai by train.

In the day to day take local tuk tuks not the touristy ones, and the small local buses, sometimes the urban rides are as little as 15 to 30 THB!

Go cheap on the booze

If you're looking to enjoy drinks and partying on a tight budget in Thailand, there are affordable options available. Skip trendy bars and clubs in the city center and instead explore the streets and convenience stores for the cheapest booze. Most regular bars in Thailand don't charge a cover fee, making them more budget-friendly.

It is possible to find really cheap booze in Thailand but careful with the quality!

For an authentic local experience, try Ya Dong, Thailand's home-brewed moonshine liquor. Look for stalls on the side of the road with large jars filled with brown liquid and ask for "ya dong." Prices vary by location, but you can often find small flasks, sometimes filled into empty Red Bull bottles, for 20 - 30 THB ($0.66 - $1), or 3/4 liter bottles for under 100 THB ($3.30).

If you prefer branded variations of whiskey, the cheapest 1-liter bottles like 100 Pipers or Sangsom can be found at places like 7/11 for around 200 - 400 THB ($6.60 - $13.21). Large bottles of beer (640 ml) are typically priced at 45 - 60 THB ($1.46 - $1.98) at convenience stores, while bars usually charge 100 - 200 THB ($3.30 - $6.60) for the same.

Thailand is also known for its notorious booze "buckets," which are popular for partying. These small buckets contain a flask of Thai whiskey mixed with soda and sometimes Red Bull. When going to bars and clubs, this can be one of the most affordable ways to enjoy a buzz for your money.

Explore off-peak seasons: Consider traveling during shoulder seasons or low seasons when prices are generally lower. This applies to most destinations in Thailand, including Chiang Rai, Sukhothai, and Lampang, where accommodation rates tend to be more budget-friendly outside of peak tourist periods.

Take advantage of free attractions: Many destinations in Thailand offer free or low-cost attractions. Visit temples, parks, and natural sites like the Sukhothai Historical Park or the beaches of Koh Phangan, which provide stunning experiences at minimal or no cost.
