Nusa Penida is a diver’s and snorkeler’s paradise. It is one of the world's richest marine ecosystems. The waters surrounding the island are frequented and highly populated by majestic manta rays, both reef and oceanic species, easily visible even from above the cliffs!
Beneath the surface, the coral reefs burst with vibrant marine biodiversity. It is very common to spot colourful parrotfish, butterflyfish, and angelfish as well as big schools of surgeonfish, triggerfish, and damselfish.
When it comes to land wildlife, Nusa Penida's cliffs provide vital nesting sites for the Bali Starling, a critically endangered bird species endemic to Bali. Additionally, it is not uncommon to spot other avian residents, including the Indonesian raven, also known as the Collared Crow.

They are pretty affordable and they are conveniently located. We are not going to lie they are not lux places, they rather offer basic amenities but close-to-nature experiences.
If you are after some more adventurous vibes, then you might opt for cliffside stays at “The Semabu Hills Hotel," which offers breathtaking views of the ocean. This place is absolutely stunning but the terrain is a bit steep and somewhat rocky, but incredible vistas!
Lastly, if you are after romance and you are looking for a touch of luxury, we can totally recommend you stay at "Atuh Beach Homestay”. This place is literally the most idyllic beachfront escape we have ever stayed at.
In contrast, Nusa Lembongan also boasts a variety of accommodations to fit different travelling preferences.

Both Nusa Penida's and Nusa Lembongan's coastline is diverse and insane!
Kelingking Beach
Kelingking Beach, also called T-Rex Beach or Kelingking Secret Point Beach, is the go-to spot on Nusa Penida Island.
Once you catch sight of it, you will understand why. Despite the effort needed to get there, you will be rewarded with an impressive view! People love Kelingking Beach because the cliffs look just like a T-Rex dinosaur. The dino's head peeks out on the left side of the bay, and its body and tail curve around to the right.
It is actually possible to get down to this beach, but just a quick warning, you need to be careful if you decide to explore it. The hike down to Kelingking Beach is a bit of a tight squeeze and a bit of a balancing act to get down to the shoreline. The trek from top to bottom takes about 30 minutes each way and our best advice is to wear comfy shoes, to be pretty sharp that day and to be somewhat fit.
As for the best time to visit, we recommend aiming for early mornings or late afternoons. That's when the magic really happens in terms of colour, calmness and no crowds around. You might get lucky and even have this incredible place all to yourself, which is kind of amazing.
If you are not up for the adventurous trek down to Kelingking Beach, as it can be a bit tricky, no worries – there are plenty of viewpoints right along the cliffs that give you jaw-dropping views of Nusa Penida's coastline. You can take it all in without having to do the hiking hustle.
Banah Cliff Viewpoint
Banah Cliff stands as another remarkable viewpoint on Nusa Penida Island. It is actually not as popular as Kelingking Beach, but equally awe-inspiring. There, there are two stunning viewpoints and we definitely recommend you are cautious while taking pictures from these points due to the absence of safety barriers and the steepness of the terrain. The panoramic western viewpoint offers sweeping vistas of the towering cliffs and the vast ocean below.
On clear days, particularly, early morning or late afternoon for sunset views. It is even possible to catch a glimpse of Kelingking Beach's distinctive T-Rex tail formation. Meanwhile, the eastern lookout presents an impressive view of a gracefully arched rock
Angel’s Billabong
Angel's Billabong is another popular gem in Nusa Penida. It is home to a natural infinity pool framed by rock cliffs that jut out above the ocean, treating you to a stunning view of Manta Point Beach.
It is like a cool hangout spot where nature and the ocean meet. You will find it close to Pasih Uug (Broken Beach), another hotspot sporting unique limestone formations. This naturally formed rock lagoon serves up a postcard-worthy seascape that's straight out of a dream.
Angel’s Billabong flaunts turquoise waters so clear they make you want to go down and swim! You can descend into these crystalline rock pools for a refreshing swim or a leisurely soak, but it's crucial to keep in mind to do it during the low tide!
The rocks under the pool might look a bit rugged and pointy as you are getting in, and of course, do it with caution but once you are actually in the pool, you will notice that they turn into this surprisingly smooth path under the water.
Broken Beach
Broken Beach is just one of the many cool spots you have to check out on Nusa Penida Island. It is home to a natural bridge that stretches over the bluest waters you will ever see. This place is a must!
Contrary to Angel’s Billabong, it is not possible to swim/dive here, but the views are simply breathtaking. You can take this panoramic walk that goes all around the edge of Broken Beach.
Manta viewpoint
Manta Viewpoint vistas will blow your mind. It is right between Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach. As you do that, you will be able to contemplate manta rays swimming around beneath you, and the best part is no need for strenuous hikes. This is by far one of our favourite places in Indonesia.
Atuh Beach
Atuh Beach, located within Nusa Penida's picturesque landscapes, is a true island gem. The beach's claim to fame lies in its iconic natural rock arch that gracefully spans crystal-clear turquoise waters, creating a sight that's postcard-worthy.
How do you get there? take the concrete steps carved into the mountain's side either from the left or the right-hand side of the cliffs. It's a quick 5 to 10-minute hike, and you're right by the shore.
Atuh Beach and Atuh Beach Viewpoint are hands down one of the most stunning places around Bali. The picture is a sandy beach surrounded by palm trees full of coconuts homing a cove where the turquoise waters just go in and out. You can dip into the water for a refreshing swim or just lounge under one of those chill straw umbrellas lining the shore.
Thousand Island Viewpoint
Thousand Island viewpoint is one of the spots that is unmissable in Indonesia. It is home to pristine beaches on the east coast of the island and it is located right next to Rumah Pohon Treehouse.
We would definitely recommend you go down to the viewpoint as it only takes 5 minutes hiking down following the steps.

Diamond Beach
Diamond Beach in Nusa Penida is undeniably one of the most spectacular shorelines we have ever set foot on. Diamond Beach in Nusa Penida is a true gem. Its pristine white sand, stunning turquoise waters, and lush cliffs create an incredibly picturesque scene that's hard to forget. The famous chalky-white stairway provides access to this paradise, leading you down to a shoreline that's perfect for both relaxation and exploration.
Diamond Beach has two distinct sections. One reveals vibrant green moss-covered rocks and tidal pools, though regrettably, a fair share of trash has washed up on its sands.
However, the other part boasts pristine white sand, gentle coconut palm trees, cozy caves, and tranquil waters – a perfect haven for a relaxing swim.
While you are here, don't miss exploring the small caves at the base of the cliffs. And after that slightly sweaty staircase descent, a dip in the refreshing turquoise waters is a must!
Tembeling Beach & Forest
Tembeling Beach and Forest is an incredible destination on Nusa Penida. This hidden gem boasts a unique blend of natural beauty including pristine white sand beaches, tropical rainforests, natural lagoons, hidden caves, and cliff-jumping spots.
The journey involves a short trek through lush greenery, leading you to the hidden beach cove and a refreshing natural spring pool.
However, a word of caution here is that the one-way track down to Tembeling Beach from the main road is very steep and it is only recommended for experienced riders only! Wear really comfy shoes and be super careful.
If you feel that the hike down the sketchy road is too daunting, don’t fear, there are locals around who will happily give you a ride for about 50,000 IDR.
The forested area adds an element of adventure as you navigate the pathways and discover the enchanting sights.
Tembeling is the perfect escape for those seeking a peaceful retreat and a chance to immerse themselves in the island's serene surroundings.
Crystal Bay
Crystal Bay is a must-visit spot on Nusa Penida, known for its remarkably crystal-clear waters. This beach is a haven for both relaxation and underwater exploration, surrounded by palm trees making it a favourite among snorkelers and divers like us!
There are also several beach shack cafes, traditional temples, a coconut palm tree forest, and viby colourful umbrellas along the shoreline at Crystal Bay creating the perfect escape when on Nusa Penida Island.
Malibu Beach
Malibu Beach in Nusa Penida is a coastal gem that captures the essence of paradise. With its powdery white sands and azure waters, it offers a tropical haven for beachgoers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Pandan Beach
Pandan Beach is a serene coastal retreat tucked away on the eastern shores of Nusa Penida. While it might not be as widely known as some other beaches on the island, it boasts a unique charm that draws visitors seeking a more tranquil and laid-back experience.
The journey to Pandan Beach is an adventure in itself, involving a bumpy ride through rustic roads that wind through the island's landscape.
Getting on a 15-minute hike from Crystal Bay will take you to an oasis of pure paradise, where you will find crystal-clear turquoise waters and velvety white sands!

Both Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan are home to several incredible waterfalls. In Nusa Penida is possible to find incredible beauties such as:
Peguyangan Waterfall
Peguyangan Waterfall emerges as a sought-after attraction on the island, largely due to its renowned stunning 750 blue stairs ingeniously carved into the cliff's side that will lead you to the magic waterfalls.
If remote hikes with steep paths and an adrenaline rush are your kind of thing, this trail won't disappoint you!
Starting from the top of a lofty limestone cliff, like many Nusa Penida hikes, the journey downwards is relatively manageable, taking around 30 minutes. However, be prepared for a strenuous climb back up. Those bright blue stairs lead you to an ancient Hindu temple nestled at the cliff's base.
We recommend you bring a sarong or scarf with you as you will need to cover your shoulders and legs. You will be able to rent one in case you forget for a price of 10,000 IDR.
While this destination might require a bit more effort to access and take a tad longer, it's an experience that's an absolute must when diving into the best that Nusa Penida offers.
Seganing Waterfall

Stretching an impressive 300 meters in length and rising 15 meters tall, it is possible to visit the temple and cave from 7 am to 5 pm including weekends when live prayer ceremonies take place here. For this, you will need to dress modestly and cover your shoulders and legs.
The cave's interior is adorned with traditional Indonesian ornaments, while a grand altar stands at its heart.
Continue along the path until you reach the end of the cave, and there you'll be greeted by a captivating sight – a charming village nestled amidst the verdant embrace of the mountainside.
