We have lived or spent a meaningful amount of time in both places to get a fair idea of the costs of each and which one comes down to be more expensive. To be honest, both places are cheap compared to Western standards, however, is Phuket more expensive than Bangkok?

Yes, Phuket is generally pricier than Bangkok. From accommodations to dining and transportation, Phuket's picturesque charm often comes with elevated costs. However, Bangkok stands out with more affordable alcohol prices and select expenses. Consider your budget and preferences when choosing between these two vibrant Thai destinations.

Phuket and Bangkok stand out as two of Thailand's most popular and developed destinations. Phuket is the country's largest island and it is home to the most breathtaking beaches.

Phuket’s beauty and charm reside in its laid-back vibe and palm-fringed streets and beaches.

When one plans a trip to Phuket is inevitable to think of the exciting nightlife, tons of water activities, cultural richness, intricate temples and the charming Sino-Portuguese architecture in the Old Town. Simply, a paradise for relaxation, adventure and cultural experience

On the flip side, Bangkok is the bustling capital of Thailand and the perfect place to catch the urban vibe blended with its rich traditional heritage.

The cityscape in this case is rather the opposite of Phuket, it is surrounded by towering skyscrapers, ornate temples, restaurants, street markets, tons of street food, bars and traffic! A different type of paradise where the charm resides in the perfect mix of historical sites and contemporary city life.

When you compare the cost of living in these two cities, as we mentioned earlier, Phuket comes down to slightly more expensive than Bangkok. Whether you are travelling around any of these two places or just living there, you are likely going to spend less in Bangkok than in Phuket for the same lifestyle.

When it comes to addressing which of the cities are cheaper or more expensive, please note that anywhere in Thailand, and Phuket and Bangkok are no exceptions, is cheap. This is compared to Western standards. The costs of living in these two cities are relatively comparable. There are key differences though depending on the area of the budget that we are looking at.

Accommodation. Where should I stay in Phuket?

Accommodation and Rent in Phuket

Phuket tends to have higher prices due to its premium as a popular island destination, while Bangkok's prices can vary widely depending on the area and type of accommodation. Also, Bangkok is pretty huge, so it really depends on whether you stay right next to Wat Arun or next to the International Airport.

Phuket offers a pretty diverse range of accommodation options. On average, it is possible to find affordable guesthouses or budget hotels for around $20 to $50 per night.

In fact, we have sometimes just rocked up on a day without any previous bookings and no problem! However, we recommend having everything well booked and established though, to avoid any issues!

If you are after a low-cost hostel or guest house in Phuket, we recommend you check out D's Corner & Guesthouse. This place is a pretty decent place for what you pay and it is right in the heart of Phuket's Night Market. This way food, other goodies and fun are just a few minutes away from your hotel!

When it comes to mid-range hotels, with a bit more inclusions in terms of amenities and services, the costs are set between $50 to $150 per night, which is not that bad!

In fact, we stayed at DARA Hotel - SHA Plus for over 10 days and it was a fantastic experience and a great value for what we paid. It is not difficult to get lux level in Thailand for a few extra dollars, versus what you would get, say in Australia for the same price! Totally recommend the place.

Lastly, for those seeking luxury, high-end resorts and villas can range from $500 to well over $1000 per night, depending on the location mainly.

For our second wedding anniversary, we decided to spend 5 days around Kamala beach area, which is a bit of a more upscale part of Phuket and we stayed in Keemala - SHA Plus.

Honestly, we can only emphasise the words, wow! It is an incredible resort, pretty much built in the jungle but with ocean views, how is that?

Also, the rooms are called bird nests and have their own infinity pool in the room facing the ocean! The food inclusions, transport services and overall hospitality and beauty are there!

If you are thinking of a special occasion or simply a celebration of life, please consider this place, you won’t regret it!

In terms of long-term rentals, the market for apartments and condos in Phuket is broad. There are tons of popular expats and digital nomads, just like us, that offer affordable and competitive monthly rental prices.

Monthly rents can vary significantly based on the size, location, and facilities of the property. A basic one-bedroom apartment like the one we stayed at for over two months, might cost around $300 to $600 per month, while more upscale options could go up to $1000 or more.

Accommodation and Rent in Bangkok

In contrast, Bangkok's accommodation options are more than broad. There are a plethora of apartments, condos, villas, hotels, hostels, guesthouses you name it! Thus, reflecting the city's cosmopolitan nature.

When it comes to finding, cheap hostels and budget hotels, Bangkok is king, it is not called the backpacker's paradise for nothing! A double-bed standard room with a private bathroom can cost around $15 to $40 per night. Hotels like blah blha are phenomenal options.

If you are after a backpacker’s dorm for the ultimate budget experience, check out Tamni, they are super well located, right in the heart of Chinatown the owners are pretty dope and it is cheap!

Moving on to the mid-range hotel level, the range of nightly rate goes from $40 to $150 per night. We have stayed at —- for optimal location as Shukumvit is prime area and there are tons of things going on there for food, party and overall Bangkok vibe. Totally recommended!

If you are thinking of going all in and are checking out luxury accommodations, Bangkok is famous for being home to renowned and iconic hotels, like the Lebua at state tower. We had an incredible stay, the restaurant where breakfast is served is incredible, and the hotel becomes one of the most popular rooftop bars in the city. It is pricey, we are not going to deny it but it is worth a weekend! They can range from $500 to over $2000 per night.

For long-term rentals, Bangkok offers a range of choices as well. Monthly rents for a basic one-bedroom apartment, gated, with security cameras, with a seven eleven inside, yep! The one that was sour home for a couple of months was a bit further from the city but cheap, convenient and pretty much had everything you need, even gym and a pool! We paid 300$ a month! Other prices can start at around $300 to $600, with higher-end options going up to $1000 or more, especially in prime locations.

Food and Dining

When it comes to finding reasonably priced meals, both Phuket and Bangkok offer a diverse range of dining experiences, and the variation in food costs between these cities is influenced by your culinary preferences. However, street food stands out as a budget-friendly choice in both places.

Phuket’s oceanfront dining establishments offer a picturesque ambience that comes at a slightly higher price, sometimes worth it. Meanwhile, Bangkok's lively street food markets and wide-ranging restaurant scene provide a multitude of options to explore, it is possible to get a pretty decent Pad Thai on the go for 20 baths! For real!

However, if you are looking at dining at mid-range restaurants or beachside cafes that may cost around $10 to $20 per person, those goes a bit higher, almost Western standards, while high-end dining experiences with ocean views can reach $50 or more per person.

Best places for amazing and affordable food in Phuket

1. Patong: Banzaan Market, Jungceylon along Beach Road are home to bustling markets featuring stalls selling affordable chicken, duck, noodle, and rice dishes.
   Scattered across Patong, you'll also find numerous mid-range restaurants, often displaying picture menus with price details outside, making it easy to identify your preferred options.
2. Phuket Old Town: There is a plethora of economical eateries in the Old Town, some with long-standing histories, like Kota Khao Man Gai, a family-operated restaurant since the 1960s. Some of their iconic dishes are as cheap as 50 baht like their red pork with rice (moo daeng) dish.
3. Local Markets: This is for the most budget-friendly options, local fresh markets scattered across the island are unbeatable. These markets offer complete meals – papaya salads, grilled chicken, banana pancakes, and fresh seasonal fruits. that can be enjoyed by the beach.
4. Chalong and Beyond: In Chalong, a variety of food stalls emerge just before lunch, serving until supplies run out in the evening. Over 15 curry and fish dishes are available, alongside Pad Thai and papaya salad stalls.
